Royal Caribbean Cruise Review
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) was founded by three Norwegian shipping company dynasties in 1969: Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, and I.M. Skaugen & Company, and Gotaas-Larsen.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is one of two affiliates of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the second-largest cruise operator in the world.
The line's first newbuild, Song of Norway, entered service in 1970, followed by Nordic Prince and Sun Viking.
In 1982 Royal Caribbean finally received widespread global recognition when it launched the MS Song of America (1982-1999), over twice the size of Sun Viking and at the time the third largest passenger vessel afloat, after the SS Norway (SS France 1961) and the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2.
MS Song of America was built in 1982 at Wärtsilä Hietalahti shipyard in Helsinki (Finland) for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
After a corporate restructuring in 1988, the line launched Sovereign of the Seas, the largest passenger vessel afloat at the time, continuing a rapid growth trend.
Today, RCI operates a fleet of modern super- and megaliners including the largest passenger ship afloat, the Oasis of the Seas.
Royal Caribbean was different to Carnival and NCL in that it launched its cruise operations with brand new ships, whereas the others had only older, pre-owned tonnage.
Royal Caribbean's signature Viking Crown Lounge is a familiar sight in almost all parts of the world, and the company has a strong presence in the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, and other exotic cruise destinations.
Royal Caribbean consistently wins honors as the best mass-market cruise line. All ships since 1991 have names ending in "of the Seas."
In 1997 Royal Caribbean International bought Celebrity Cruises for $1.3 billion and in 2006 acquired Pullmantur Cruises for $889.9 million. In 2007 its Celebrity Cruises division created a new cruise line, Azamara Cruises, with two ships. In the same year, Royal Caribbean established CDF Croisieres de France with one ship, diverted from the Pullmantur Cruises fleet. RCI's ships are shapely, with well-rounded sterns, and unique interesting design profiles that make them instantly recognizable. All RCI ships have large and brightly lit casinos as well as the shopping galleries that passengers have to walk through to get almost anywhere else. All these are cleverly designed to extract maximum revenue.
